The VIM Tool Company was started in 1931 as one of “The original mobile tool distributor” based out of Minneapolis , MN. The original owner would travel the country selling specialty automotive tools out of his businessman coupe.
Ray Durston founded the Flexible Carbon Scraper Co. in 1932 in Pasadena, California. Using his $200 WWI Sailor’s Bonus as capital, he began manufacturing the company’s first product, the Flexible Carbon Scraper.
In the Early 1940’s Ray Durston had expanded the Flexible Carbon Scraper Co and was manufacturing small bits and wrenches for various automotive tool distributor across the country, including The VIM Tool Company.
In 1944 The VIM Tool Company was acquired by Ray Durston and the trademark VIM was adopted to identify the company’s expanded line of proprietary specialty automotive tools.
In 1946 the Flexible Carbon Scraper Company became Durston Manufacturing Co. The company continued to grow and expand its product line.
In 1959, having out grown the Pasadena facility, a new larger facility was built in La Verne, California. Over the years the plant was enlarged several times to facilitate the growth of product line, which currently includes over 2,000 products.
In 2020, the company was purchased by Luis E. Lopez and moved to its new home in Tampa, FL. Luis had been the Director of Sales for almost a decade prior to taking over as owner. In 2021 Durston Manufacturing Co. celebrated its 90th anniversary of providing quality products for the professional automotive industry. The company remains a family owned and operated business and will continue to offer the same level of service and quality that it has shown its customers over the years.
